The U.S. Ambassador to Canada and other dignitaries will join residents in the Newfoundland town of Gander to mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11. In 2001, the community of Gander, with a population of fewer than 10,000, helped thousands of stranded passengers when U.S. airspace was closed and planes were grounded after the attacks. The commemoration comes 25 years after the deadliest attack on U.S. soil, which killed nearly 3,000 people when hijacked planes slammed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania.
